Google Meet on Tuesday, June 2nd

Google Meet will be on June 2nd at 10:00 am
(because Monday is a PD day).

Theme: Favourite Food!
Be prepared to tell your classmates all about your favourite food! If it's a food you like to make with your parents, you can tell us about how to make it. If you want to show us the yummy food you made, that would be exciting! (This is not a requirement).

Please don't forget to submit your Yearbook Cover Page to Mrs. Taylor. I'd love to see it too.

Enjoy your weekend!

Raz Kids Reading Test - Next Week

Raz Kids Reading Test Information

You will see the above "Flight Check" on your Raz Kids Dashboard once your Reading Assessment has been assigned by your teacher!  Please check your dashboard on Monday.

For Parents:

Usually as students end their school year, teachers are able to do 1-1 reading assessments to best determine where to begin for the following year.  Since we unfortunately are not able to meet and read with each of our students, we are asking for you to follow the detailed instructions below and complete the assigned reading task.  Your child will record themselves reading INDEPENDENTLY and the results will be shared with the teacher.
Teachers will use this information to help your child transition into the next grade and provide next year’s teacher with a great starting point.

If you are unable to complete this task due to computer difficulties please contact your child's teacher.

Please note that the task can only be done once and then will disappear from your child’s reading folder.  Thank you for helping us set your child up for success next year.

For Parents and Students:

Please click HERE for detailed instructions on how to complete the Reading
Assessment in Raz Kids.

If you have any questions, please contact me as soon as possible.

Checking In

Just a quick note to check in with everyone!  How are you all doing?  Again, I know we are all living in a far from perfect situation and I am sure glitches in schedules, technology and moods happen often (as they do in my house too!).  I wanted to say thank you for hanging in there and doing your best! That is all that we can ask for. The best you can do under the circumstances, and that may change day to day.

Please remember that if something doesn't make sense, or you are not quite sure what to do, or a link isn't working, please email me.  I like getting emails and I enjoy helping all of you with whatever you need help with!  I have had more emails this week than last week and it's been lovely to give someone a call to explain something and to email back and forth.  So, don't hesitate to email me.

Super Cool - Build Your Own City

While exploring fun projects on various websites, I came upon one I thought might be fun to try. An architectural studio called Fosters + Partners have created some paper building templates that students can print out, fold, colour and use to build their own paper cities.

I have included the PDF file HERE of the various templates.

If you choose to create your own paper city, please feel free to take a picture and share it with me!

I have also included a link to their website HERE, the various activities are found in their News section of the website, including how to draw realistic trees too.

Have fun creating!

Google Meet on Monday

We are going to play: WOULD-YOU-RATHER during our next Google Meet on Monday!

Before Monday, you need to come up with 1 or 2 "would-you-rather" questions (examples below). You will have a chance to ask a classmate your question. They have to answer the question, and provide 1 or 2 reasons why they chose that answer.

Example "would-you-rather" questions:
-Would you rather shovel snow for an hour, or rake leaves for an hour?

-Would you rather be the tallest person in the world, or the shortest person in the world?
-Would you rather be able to be invisible, or able to fly?
-Would you rather kiss a frog or hug a porcupine?

I'm excited to play this fun game! Enjoy your weekend. I miss you all!

Raz Kids Assignment

Hi Families,

Please make sure you are using Raz Kids for daily reading. This resource is a valuable tool that will ensure your child is reading levelled material appropriate for their reading development.

I have assigned reading in Raz Kids for your child. Please let them work independently on this reading as it is the only way for them to progress in their comprehension.

When reviewing student progress, I have noticed that there are many not logging in at all. I have given bonus stars as an incentive for great work done so far or as a reminder to log in and read.

Please watch for more information in the coming days regarding Raz Kids.

Happy Long Weekend! – CUPE LOCAL 4186

Isn't this weather fabulous? We are so fortunate! I hope everyone is enjoying some fresh air and making some new memories.

At our house, we finally found a playset that is appropriate for our small children. Today, we spent some time putting it together.

We will continue building and adding all of the fun stuff tomorrow.

I hope to see you on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. for our Google Meet - Beach theme. Please see my earlier blog so you remember what we are going to talk about.

Rattlesnake Main Event Example

Here is an example of a Rattlesnake main event I created:

(Great beginning goes here)

I stepped carefully following my father's footsteps up the steep hill. Suddenly, I heard a familiar sound. SSSSS!! SSSSS! "Dad. A snake. Stop!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. We both froze where we were waiting to hear another hiss and rattle from the rattlesnake. I didn't know what to do. I was so scared. My legs were trembling as quietly as they could. I noticed that I began to hold my breath in order to silence it. My dad motioned for me to follow him to the top of a large boulder. I moved as quick and quiet as I could, my heart beating fast in my chest. I felt safe with my dad's arm around my shoulders. We stood still searching the ground below us for the rattlesnake. With the sun setting soon, we had to hurry as we needed to get off the mountain. Finally, I saw a little bit of movement. Something slithered slowly across the small rocks right where we had just been walking. "Oh my, I thought to myself. "We were way to close to that rattler!" Tears fell silently down my cheeks. My feet were too frozen in fear to move and my body felt so tired. I was so happy that I had not been hiking alone. I pointed at the ground and my dad nodded that he too saw the snake.

When we felt certain that the snake had moved away, we finally spoke. "We need to be careful sweetie," my dad spoke calmly. "There could be a rattlesnake den in the area." We looked at our map and decided on a different route to head down the mountain.

(Then the ending goes here)

Problem: A rattlesnake is blocking our path and the sun will set soon.

Super Cool Slushies

Hi Familes,

I don't know about you, but I have been craving a slushie from the convenience store. My favorite flavour is rootbeer. Do you have a favorite flavour?

As the stores aren't selling slushies right now, I thought it might be fun to make one of my own at home. If you are also craving a slushie or looking for a cool science project, click the link below to make your very own at home.

This science experiment relates to our learning of Exploring Liquids and Hot and Cold Temperatures. Please send me a picture of you drinking your slushie if you decide to do this "cool" experiment!

Weekend Update

Good morning Families,

We were outside for most of the day on Saturday and went for a family bike ride and picnic. It felt so amazing to just be in the sunshine! It was the first time our son rode his own bike and didn't ride in the bike trailer. He was so proud. He is also busy trying to learn how to ride without training wheels.

My daughter is also very proud of herself as this year her feet reach the pedals and she is busy riding her bike too!

Have you tried something new? I hope you had a great weekend and enjoyed the sunshine!
